Obgleich in New York geboren, verbrachte James Crawford Thom (1835-1898) seine Jugend auf einer Farm in der Nähe von Ramapo, New Jersey, welches sein späteres Interesse für entsprechend thematisierte Landschaft-und Genremalerei beeinflusste. 1853 studierte er Kunst an der National Academy of Design. Es folgten Studienreisen nach Frankreich, dort als Schüler von Camille Corot, Thomas Couture, Henri Picou und Pierre Edouard Frede. 1866 zog er nach London und stellte in der Royal Academy aus. 1873 kehrte er in die USA zurück und stellte regelmäßig in der National Academy, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art und dem Art Institute of Chicago aus. Thoms Landschaft-und Genremalerei mit Kindern in ländlicher Umgebung sind von Camille Corot und den Malern der Hudson River School beeinflusst. Seine Werke befinden sich in zahlreichen angesehenen Sammlungen und amerikanischen Institutionen , u.a. dem Smithsonian Museum of American Art.

Fine and charming genre of the 19th century in beautiful condition.
Although born in New York City, James Crawford Thom (1835-1898) spent his youth on a farm near Ramapo, New Jersey, an upbringing that influenced his later interest in landscapes and countryside settings. He began studying art at the National Academy of Design in 1853 and continued his studies in France under noted artists and teachers Camille Corot, Thomas Couture, Henri Picou, and Pierre Edouard Frere. Thom moved to London in 1866, where he exhibited at the prestigious Royal Academy, and returned to the United States in 1873, where he continued to exhibit extensively at the National Academy, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Thomís landscapes and scenes of children in rural settings, inspired by the works of Camille Corot and the Hudson River School painters, are currently included in the collections of many respected American institutions, including the Smithsonian Museum of American Art.
